There are two registration sessions for non-residential participants: a) between 6.30 pm and 7.00 pm on Sunday 7th July, or b) between 8.30 am and 9 am on Monday morning (8th July). There will be an introductory session on the Sunday evening from 7 pm for about an hour , during which Richard Michael and the tutors will give an overview of the course content and structure. This session does not involve any playing by the participants so if you do join us that evening you do not need to bring your instrument. It would be good if you could be there for this introduction, but if this is not possible we look forward to welcoming you on the Monday morning. Please let us know when you plan to join us.
Lunch is included in the fee for non-residential participants. If you wish to stay for dinner so that you can join in the informal playing in the evening, this can be arranged at an additional cost of £6 per day. It is essential that we let the school know about extra meals for the Sunday evening in advance, so please let us know by Monday 1st July if you wish to book dinner for the first evening.
If you have any specific dietary. medical or other requirements which you did not specify on your original booking form, please let us know immediately so that we can pass that information on to the school and put any necessary arrangements in place.
We can be contacted by mobile phone (07719 985700) throughout the course, so please do pass this number on to any friends or relatives who may require it in an emergency. If they call and there is no answer, please ask them to leave a message and we will get back to them as soon as possible. Additional contact information for course participants will be provided in the course handbook which we will give you at registration.
There will be three houseparents in residence throughout the course who are there to ensure the safety and welfare of all the course participants. All houseparents have been disclosed by Disclosure Scotland. Two qualified first aiders will be on site throughout the course. Any student under 16 years of age who wishes to go off site may only do so if accompanied by one of the houseparents. Students aged 16 or 17 may go off site provided that they are in groups of at least three people.
The course timetable is available on our website. The introductory session on Sunday evening will take place at 7 pm for about an hour – it is not necessary to bring instruments to this session. The teaching sessions will run from 9.30 am until 5.00 pm on Monday to Thursday, and from 9.30 am to approximately 1 pm on Friday, followed by an informal concert beginning at 2 pm to which friends and family are warmly invited. This should finish by about 4.15 pm. There is no formal teaching in the evenings, but students are encouraged to form combos of their own if they would like to continue playing (until 10 pm latest).
Please would all players bring their own instruments (and instrument stands/amps where appropriate) – this includes pianists/keyboard players and drummers where possible. If you are not able to bring your own instrument, please let us know immediately so that we can try to make alternative arrangements. Music stands will be provided.
We do not send out any preparatory resources or reading lists prior to the course – all the materials you need will be provided at registration. The best way to prepare is to listen to as much jazz as possible!
WiFi is available in the residences and in most other areas of the school. Details of the WiFi login will be provided on arrival.
Please do not bring any unnecessary valuables with you. Personal items and instruments will not be covered under the venue’s insurance, so please make sure that you have your own cover in place against loss or damage.
There is a swimming pool on site which will be available to us at a set time each day. (Towels are not provided so please bring your own if you wish to swim.) Similar arrangements will be in place for the sports hall and tennis courts. Please bring your own tennis equipment if you want to use the courts, and indoor sports shoes for use in the sports hall.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any other information or would like to discuss any aspect of the course.
We look forward very much to seeing you all on Sunday 7th July.
With thanks and best wishes
Ruth and Kenny Irons
